Inside a Monster Transmissions’ 4L65E upgradeIf you own an automatic equipped GM vehicle, you've probably felt the dreaded slip before. One day, everything is fine, with crisp shifts and smooth operation. The next day, it's all over the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift and you're suddenly feeling down in the dumps. Unfortunately, it happens to all of us at one time or another and it's usually right after you spend all of your hard earned cash on a new speed part or power adder. If you've never been inside an automatic transmission before, it can be a terrifying experience. Seriously, it looks like it works on magic, fluid, and money, which is almost accurate if you don't really understand what is going on. Luckily, there are plenty of quality transmission shops that can rebuild your transmission without an issue, taking a 400-hp capable factory unit and turning it into a 650+ horsepower tire fryer. And, whether you're going to have someone go through your slushbox for you or you're going to try to tackle it yourself, it's important to understand the key parts of the transmission and how each one works.
Three tried and true power modifications to take your trailblazer SS Project to the next levelTruth be told, we've possibly slacked on Trailblazer SS (TBSS) projects in the past, although it hasn't been for a lack of interest or excitement. First introduced in 2006, the Trailblazer SS is a truck worthy of the nomenclature. Stuffed with an LS2 rated with 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, the TBSS is a powerhouse that can comfortably haul four people, tow a lightweight race car to the track, and run around town as if it were a completely civilized SUV for Mom. Add the optional all-wheel-drive Torsen differential into the mix and you've got a daily driver/hauler that's tough to beat. With prices finally dropping into the working man's realm, all we needed was for one of our friends to pick one up so we could get our grubby little hands on it. So when Jay Healy of Vengeance Racing told us he bought a TBSS for his wife, Mandy Healy, it didn't take much more than a phone call to get us ready to follow along with the project. That said, we wanted to approach the build in a sensible way, following along with how an enthusiast would modify these trucks in the real world, which usually involves taking one step at a time and evaluating each modification's merit based on price, horsepower, appearance, and street performance. With that in mind, we first set out to make a solid game plan, one that involved addressing each of those needs in one way or another.
The great dyno debate rages on... Which one reigns supreme.Well, here we are with another story about dynamometers and we've tested three of them at a time in one article. Already interested in skipping ahead to see which one is the "best?" Don't bother, we'll come right out and say it: They are all great. Disappointed? Sorry, but it is the truth. Several years ago, the debate raged between companies, with each brand recruiting a hoard of loyal zealots who ran to Internet forums and announced "X-brand is better than Y-brand because Y-brand is terrible!" Owners of such dynamometers rallied behind this too, posting long threads about how their dyno of choice was far superior to those "other brands" and real tuning can't be done on anything but the one they have. Of course, we all know this just isn't the case, since fast and well tuned cars come out of different shops all across the country, some with Brand X, some with Brand Y, and some with no dyno at all! So, what is the real deal here?
Still down and dirty, the 'bird creeps ever closer to that elusive 10-second timeslip."Push, push, push!" Greg was still in the driver seat, but the rest of us were pushing as hard as we could to get the Dirty Bird back on to the trailer. It took a while to get it off the track and back to the trailer by hand after the nasty--and awesome looking--backfire ended our night on what looked like it would have been our best run to date. Nitrous is nasty stuff if you're off--even just by a little--and tonight our 10-second pass just wasn't in the cards, even after solving our previous rear end issue and substantially improving the suspension, which we will get to in a minute. After running an 11.03 on our last official outing, we told you, "We are just a rear end upgrade away from running the number." And, truth be told, we were and still are on track for our 10-second pass, but unfortunately things don't always seem to go as planned. In our case this latest slew of 11-d'ohs was three weeks in the making, with our first track outing ending in an engine bay full of coolant thanks to a non-functioning radiator cap. At the time we thought we nipped a head gasket (you know, always assume the worst and panic type of stuff), so we rushed a set from Summit Racing, only to find out we didn't need them (yet).
East Coast supercharging upgrades an L99-equipped fifth-gen with a cold-air kit, headers, and VVT Camshaft. You can pick your nose, but you can't pick the engine for your fifth-gen Camaro SS--those who opt for the automatic transmission get an L99 under the hood while a manual transmission-equipped ride gets the LS3. Don't get us wrong, we aren't coming from a negative angle, just that there are two V-8 engines currently available for the Camaro SS based on transmission choice. The L99 and LS3 are nearly identical save for a couple key components--namely the parts and pieces required for the variable valve timing (VVT) and components of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, formerly known as Displacement on Demand (DOD). Let the debates begin on which engine is better for your Camaro, but rest assured, both new generation small-block engines are powerful and an excellent platform for performance.
The ultimate cathedral versus rectangular port cylinder head showdown. The question of the day seems to involve the difference between the original cathedral-port and modern rectangular-port LS heads. More specifically, which one is better? Were we to compare two sets of production heads, there would be little comparison, as even the very best production (cathedral-port) LS6 heads (243 castings) offer nowhere near the flow and power potential of the current LS3 heads. Based on flow numbers alone, the LS3 head has the LS6 heads covered by 50-60 cfm on the intake side (though the change in chamber volume will drop the static compression ratio). The flow figures alone make the swap over to the LS3 components very desirable, especially considering the fact that the stock LS3 head will support well over 600 horsepower (we recently made 690 hp on a 468 stroker with stock LS3 heads). The downside is that the head swap from LS1/LS6 heads to LS3 heads is more involved than a simple R&R. The new heads require a 4.00-inch bore block, LS3 rockers and intake manifold as well, both increasing the cost and limiting the swap potential to 6.0-6.2L motors (and big-bore stroker variants).
